When a liquid sample is applied directly to the reagent carrier, the water contained in the sample acts as a solvent, dissolving the immobilized reagents and initiating chemical reactions with the target analytes. The resulting reactions are then measured and analyzed to determine the concentration or activity of the substances being tested.
